Playing Golf Well: It’s a Matter of the Mind
from: Maxx Golf GuidesGolf is a game that is more about mental than physical ability. Of course, you do need to know how to play the game, but even if you're a superstar when swining the club, if you don't have good mental control and techniques, you could still play badly.
No matter what level you're at, you need to be actively practicing ways to help you deal with stress. Golf requires focus on both the technical as wells as the mental side of the game. Top golfers all over the world have learned to balance and cope with the stress playing golf can cause.
Visualization is a technique that can play a major role in helping anyone excel at golf. When you're on the course and ready to take your swing, use your imagination. Close your eyes for a moment, picture yourself hitting the ball, and allow your mind to see exactly where you want your shot to land. Pumping yourself up mentally before you even take a swing can improvement your game significantly.
All golfers, regardless of their experience level, have days when their game is off, thus it's important to be able to mentally get past this and prevent it from affecting future games. If you've ever had your self-confidence vanish on a competition day or lost concentration after a bad shot, join the crowd. These issues can easily be conquered because they come from some mental pressure in your mind, not because you're a bad golfer. Reversing how you deal with these problems mentally can solve problems, not just create them.
There are many golfers who practice mental techniques to help them learn how to cope with distractions. One way is to have someone deliberately try to throw your game off when you're about to take a shot. This can be done with loud noises, talking or even dropping clubs. If you can develop the mental strength to tune everything else out, and focus totally on your swing, you'll definitely be able to improve your game.
Your mind controls your body, your body doesn't control your mind. Therefore, a lot of the problems a player has to deal with in golf are actually due to their mind not being properly trained. A golfer should learn to control their mind to give their body accurate directions needed to achieve what they've set out to do.
Pressure during competition often creates a whole new set of problems. When a golfer is practicing, there's no pressure to succeed. But when it comes time to playing competitively, he may sabotage himself with negative thoughts. So work on programming your mind to work with you, not against you.
Mental training techniques can radically increase a golfers scores. These techniques include visualization, self-talk and getting into and maintaining an optimum mental state.
Stability, focus and self-confidence are all best achieved with a consistent mental training program that only consumes about ten minutes of your time off the course and is used at strategic times on the course. During a round this will usually happen when you feel pressure to perform.
There are a many common golf problems that can be conquered with the proper mental training. You can benefit from training your mind with mental techniques for lack of self-confidence, slumps in form, playing either better or worse in the back nine, concentration or technical issues, no improvement in your game no matter how hard you practice, anxiety, irregularity in competition, injury or illness just before competitions.
With proper mental training, these problems are relatively easy to overcome. Mental training can also be very helpful in taking your game to another level, allowing you to achieve a dominant mind set during every round of golf you play.
